Pulse of the Earth (2020) – behind the scenes
About
For her first institutional exhibition in France, the Korean artist Jeongmoon Choi, explores the themes of line and space, movement and time, body and environment.
With threads, UV light and sound, she creates a new installation that evokes the pulse of the earth during an earthquake and transforms the glazed space of FRAC Alsace into an immersive installation, like a three-dimensional seismogram.
Using seismographic recordings of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, that triggered one of the largest tsunamis and led to the Fukushima nuclear disaster, Jeongmoon Choi translates the movements of the tectonic plates by a set of threads stretched over the 250 sqm of the exhibition space. A technical process of folding and twisting that allows the filaments to both drive vibrations and surrounding sounds, as well as to build powerful but vulnerable architectures that oscillate between virtuality and reality. Immersive and labyrinthine, this visual and auditory experience takes visitors to appropriate a new „intermediate space“, shared between shadow and light that bends the passage of the body and draws new perspectives and paths to tame.
Provoking paradoxical impressions, the sensual and abstract works by Jeongmoon Choi play with the limits of our perception and tend towards the transcendent and the intangible. The artist reminds us to order about the dysfunctions of a human activity that constantly confronts the cosmic energies of Nature. A way of meditating on the vulnerability of our species and the fragility of our environment, as well as on the beauty of creation which sometimes gives way to a feeling of threat and instability facing the effects of disasters and natural phenomena.
